Make sure you can clearly see the bottom of your swimming pool. Cloudy swimming pools are a big hazard.

Cloudy swimming pools aren't just unpleasant... they're dangerous! Keep it clear.

Cloudy swimming pools aren’t just unpleasant… they’re dangerous! Keep it clear.

A very preventable yet dangerous condition in a swimming pool occurs when the water gets too cloudy.  Cloudy water in your pool will appear milky white and have no colorations. There are several reasons why this happens—and it’s serious. It greatly increases the  risk of  drownings.  The cloudy water makes it  impossible for life guards (or you) to see a distressed swimmer at the bottom of your pool. Check out these facts.

  • Every year there are over 3,000 drowning deaths in the United States
  • More than 1 in 5 of these are children under 14
  • Drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional death for children 1 to 4
  • Cloudy or murky water is cited as a contributing factor in nearly 10% of drownings
  • This means that over 300 deaths could be prevented every year if a few simple maintenance steps were implemented.

Cloudy water can be caused by many contaminants in your pool.  Swimmers’ suntan oils and lotions, dirt, algae, bacteria and minerals are among the most common culprits. Storms can also make your pool water cloudy with pollen, dirt, dust, sand, etc.

It’s crucial to maintain proper pool chemistry all the time. Clean your pool filters regularly.  It also helps to make sure that swimmers shower before getting in the water, minimizing the oils, lotions and dirt that leech into the water.  Here’s a general rule of thumb: Pool water is too cloudy if you cannot easily see the bottom of the pool.  If your pool situation becomes this serious, evacuate the pool and do not allow swimming until the condition has been treated properly and cleared up. Maintaining clear water is just one of the many ways to help ensure the safety of all.
